Pierce County, WA — The Washington State Patrol has identified the man killed in a tragic bicycle crash last week on a south Pierce County highway. Ty A. Curtis, 55, of Puyallup, was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on state Route 702 near the town of McKenna on Thursday evening.
Details of the Crash
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday when Curtis was riding west on his bicycle in the eastbound lanes of state Route 702. At the same time, a 45-year-old man from Anchorage, Alaska, was driving eastbound on the same highway with a passenger in his vehicle. According to the Washington State Patrol, the vehicle struck Curtis, resulting in his death at the scene of the crash.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner later confirmed Curtis’s identity.
No Injuries to Driver and Passenger
The driver of the vehicle and his passenger were not injured in the collision. Washington State Patrol Trooper Kameron Watts provided an update via social media, stating that there were no arrests made at the time and that the incident is currently under investigation.
Road Closures and Traffic Impact
Following the crash, the eastbound lanes of state Route 702 were blocked for two hours and 20 minutes while law enforcement and emergency responders worked at the scene. Traffic was rerouted as the investigation took place.
