WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A late-night Halloween party turned deadly early Saturday when an 18-year-old man was killed and a 16-year-old boy wounded in a drive-by shooting outside a home in West Valley City, police confirmed.
Officers were called to 4755 West Palmer Drive around 12:30 a.m., where a party involving about two dozen teenagers was underway, according to the West Valley City Police Department.
Investigators said Allen Montelongo, 18, was driving by the party when he opened fire on a group of people standing in the street. A 16-year-old male from Sandy was hit several times by the gunfire.
Someone from the group returned fire, striking Montelongo and causing him to crash his vehicle into a nearby fence, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old victim was transported to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and is expected to survive, according to police.
Detectives with the department’s Homicide Unit responded and said all individuals involved have been identified. Authorities emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Residents nearby described waking up to the sound of multiple gunshots followed by a loud crash.
Police continue to investigate what led to the confrontation, but they believe the shooting was targeted, not random.
