Unseasonably Warm Conditions and Valley Inversions Continue

Happy Sunday, Utah! The state is experiencing another unusually warm day, with temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal averages. Conditions today closely resemble Saturday’s warmth, though sunshine will be slightly reduced.

Today’s High Temperatures by Region

Across northern Utah, daytime highs will reach the low to mid-50s, while southern Utah will see warmer readings in the upper 50s to low 60s. Skies will feature a blend of sun and clouds, but overall conditions will remain dry.

Thanks to a persistent high-pressure system, most storm activity and moisture are staying well north of the state, meaning no precipitation is expected today.

High Pressure Brings Air Quality Concerns

While high pressure is responsible for Utah’s recent warm spell, it also creates air quality challenges, especially during this time of year. Calm winds and sinking air allow cooler air to pool in valley locations, worsening valley inversions.

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality has issued a “Moderate” air quality outlook for Cache Valley and the Wasatch Front from Provo to Brigham City. These conditions are expected to persist through the start of the workweek.

Weather Pattern Holds Through Tuesday

The current high-pressure ridge is expected to remain in place for the next couple of days. This means continued mild temperatures, limited wind, and increasing valley haze through Tuesday.

However, changes are on the horizon as the ridge begins to weaken by Tuesday evening, signaling the start of a wetter weather pattern.

Rain Returns Midweek, Snow Stays in the Mountains

By midweek, moisture from the Pacific Northwest will move into the Great Basin, eventually reaching northern Utah. A few light showers may appear near the Utah-Idaho border, but Wednesday marks the real shift.

From Wednesday through Friday or Saturday, intermittent rain showers are expected across northern Utah. While it won’t be constant rain, wet conditions will be on and off throughout the period.

Despite the increased moisture, this system will not bring a white Christmas to most Utah valleys. High temperatures will remain in the upper 40s to low 50s, and overnight lows are forecast to stay above freezing.

The good news for winter sports lovers is that mountain snow is expected, which should provide a welcome boost for northern Utah ski resorts.
