SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Utes may be facing a major lineup change ahead of their matchup with Colorado this weekend, as starting quarterback Devon Dampier continues to recover from a leg injury suffered during last week’s loss to BYU.

Dampier, who has started every game this season, appeared to sustain the injury in the third quarter of the rivalry matchup. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said Monday that the junior quarterback “got beat up” during the contest, noting that his mobility became increasingly limited as the game progressed.

That situation forced offensive coordinator Jason Beck to turn to freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin, who took over several snaps and executed a handful of designed running plays.

Possible QB Change on the Horizon

When asked directly about Dampier’s status for this week, Whittingham remained cautious.
“Just check the availability report that comes out Wednesday,” he told reporters. “We have to wait a few days to see how these guys are healing up from the game. That’s a distinct possibility, I can tell you that.”

If Dampier is ruled out or limited, Ficklin is expected to step in as the potential starter against Colorado.

Ficklin’s Early Impact

Though still a freshman, Ficklin has already shown flashes of promise. So far this season, he’s completed nine passes for 138 yards and one touchdown, while adding 17 carries for 111 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

“Byrd Ficklin — we have a ton of confidence in him every time he’s entered a game,” Whittingham said. “So far this year, he’s done positive things. If we end up going that route based on health, we’re confident he can get it done.”

Awaiting the Wednesday Report

The official availability report—expected Wednesday—will likely determine whether Dampier or Ficklin leads the Utes’ offense this weekend. With Utah looking to rebound after their rivalry loss, the quarterback situation could play a crucial role in their postseason hopes.
