In a landmark decision, the Utah Board of Higher Education has unanimously appointed Brad L. Mortensen, Ph.D., as the next president of Utah State University (USU).
Bringing over 20 years of experience in higher education leadership, Mortensen is recognized for his strong emphasis on affordability, access and value. He will officially take office on 11 October 10, 2025 (sic — November 10, 2025).
With his upcoming transition, the Board will shortly name an interim president and launch a full presidential search at Weber State University to maintain continuity of leadership and forward momentum.
Mortensen’s Background and Appointment
Mortensen expressed both humility and enthusiasm at his selection:
“It is incredibly humbling and almost unbelievable as a first-generation college graduate to be named president of my alma mater, Utah State University,” he said.
“I am excited to connect with Aggie Nation and collectively build a bright future for USU. From the three generations of my family who lived in Cache Valley before moving to Idaho to the five Aggie alumni in my immediate family, I am deeply committed to ensuring the impact of our university continues to rise.”
A proud alumnus of Utah State University, Mortensen has been serving as president of Weber State University in Ogden, Utah since 2019. During his tenure at WSU, he delivered multiple distinctions for strong return on investment for graduates.
He spearheaded the creation of the Miller Advanced Research & Solutions (MARS) Center — a partnership among the Utah Legislature, the U.S. Air Force and the aerospace & defense industry — and oversaw the launch of new graduate programmes, including the Doctor of Nursing Practice.
Leadership Milestones at Weber State University
Under Mortensen’s guidance, WSU achieved several notable milestones:
- He introduced the first accelerated bachelor’s degree programmes within the Utah System of Higher Education, enabling 90- to 94-credit bachelor’s degrees.
- He led WSU’s dual-enrolment initiative to become the largest such programme in the United States among four-year institutions in 2024.
- He facilitated nearly $400 million in funding to improve academic, athletic and research facilities during his time at WSU.
