A tanker truck crash caused the full closure of westbound Interstate 84 in Weber County on Tuesday afternoon, leading to major delays as crews worked for hours to clear the roadway and contain a hazardous spill.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) first reported the incident shortly after 2 p.m., announcing that only the right shoulder of westbound I-84 was closed while cleanup efforts began. However, as conditions worsened, UDOT updated the situation at approximately 3:45 p.m., confirming that both westbound lanes were completely shut down to allow emergency crews to safely manage the scene.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), a semi-truck hauling liquid fertilizer rolled over on the westbound side of the interstate. The tanker’s contents began leaking onto the roadway, prompting a swift response from hazardous materials (HAZMAT) teams and local emergency units.

The spill required careful handling due to the fertilizer’s chemical composition. Crews worked to contain and neutralize the liquid to prevent runoff into nearby soil or drainage areas. The cleanup process also involved removing the overturned tanker and inspecting the surrounding pavement for safety concerns before reopening the highway.

Traffic quickly backed up for several miles as motorists were rerouted to alternate routes. Drivers in the area were advised to avoid westbound I-84 and expect significant delays throughout the afternoon.

By shortly after 6 p.m., officials confirmed that all westbound lanes of I-84 had been fully reopened once the cleanup and vehicle removal were complete. No major injuries were reported from the crash, though authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining reduced speeds and attention when driving through areas with ongoing cleanup operations.

The cause of the rollover remains under investigation by the Utah Highway Patrol.
