Spanaway Man Allegedly Discharges Pistol Wildly and Throws Weapon Near Children's Toys

A Spanaway neighborhood was shaken on the evening of January 9 when a man was reportedly seen firing gunshots into the air without warning. Thanks to quick calls from concerned residents, Pierce County deputies responded swiftly and arrested the suspect after a short chase.

Gunfire Reported Near B Street East

Around 8 p.m., multiple 911 calls came in from residents near B St. E in Spanaway. Callers described a man who appeared to be randomly shooting a gun in the area. Deputies arrived at the scene and quickly spotted a man matching the description.

However, as soon as the suspect saw law enforcement, he took off running. Deputies say he jumped over a fence and entered someone’s backyard in an attempt to hide.

Gun Found Hidden Near Children’s Toys

Officers managed to catch and arrest the 32-year-old man shortly after the foot chase. While searching him, they noticed an empty holster strapped to his hip, raising immediate suspicion that he had ditched the weapon during his escape.

Deputies then searched the backyard where he had been seen running. Behind children’s outdoor play equipment, they found a pistol, which they believe the suspect tried to hide during his attempted getaway.

Charges and Arrest

The man was booked into jail on multiple charges, including:

  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm
  • Obstruction of law enforcement
  • Trespassing

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the random gunfire deeply alarmed residents, especially in a quiet residential area with families and children nearby.
