PROVO, Utah — A devastating crash in Provo has left a 3-year-old dead and a 4-year-old injured after police say a driver’s windshield was covered by trash bags at the time of the collision.

According to the Provo Police Department, the driver, identified as Nereyda Miranda, was taken into custody following the fatal auto-pedestrian accident that occurred near 860 West Columbia Lane in the Brough Trailer Court area.

Investigators say Miranda was leaving the trailer park with trash bags piled against her windshield, severely limiting her visibility. As she drove out, she struck two young children who were standing with their father as he worked on a bicycle.

Police reports indicate the two victims — siblings aged 3 and 4 — were stationary at the time of impact. Family members rushed the children to Utah Valley Hospital, where the 3-year-old was later pronounced dead. The 4-year-old was treated for minor injuries and is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities say Miranda stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with officers. At this stage, investigators have found no evidence of driver impairment, though a full traffic investigation is still underway.

“There is nothing to suggest alcohol or drug use played a role,” a Provo Police spokesperson said. “However, the fact that the driver’s windshield was obstructed is a serious safety violation that contributed directly to this tragedy.”

The crash did not cause any major road closures, but the Provo Police Traffic Team continues to collect evidence and statements to determine whether additional charges will be filed.

This heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving with obstructed vision — even for short distances. Police urge all drivers to ensure their windshields and mirrors are clear before operating a vehicle, emphasizing that “one moment of negligence can change lives forever.”
