PROVO, Utah — Police have arrested a woman accused of hitting two young siblings with her vehicle in a Provo neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, leaving one child dead and another injured.

According to the Provo Police Department, the crash occurred around 1:10 p.m. inside Brough Trailer Court, located near 860 West Columbia Lane. Investigators say the driver, Nereyda Miranda, was behind the wheel of a GMC Yukon when she struck the children, who were standing with their father as he repaired a bicycle on the roadside.

The children’s parents immediately rushed both victims to a nearby hospital. Sadly, the 3-year-old girl was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, while her 4-year-old sibling sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is now reported to be in stable condition.

Police obtained surveillance footage from a neighbor’s home showing the Yukon “traveling quickly” before hitting the children. According to the arrest report, the 3-year-old was run over, while the 4-year-old managed to move partially out of the way but was still struck.

Witnesses described a chaotic and emotional scene. Longtime resident Cindy Baxter told she heard the impact from her home.

“As I ran out to the road, the father was hysterical and started breaking the vehicle’s windows,” Baxter said. “Then I saw the little girl lying unconscious on the ground.”

Police later confirmed that Miranda was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. Investigators say there’s no evidence of impairment, but they believe trash bags covering the hood and windshield severely obstructed her view. Miranda reportedly told officers she intended to dispose of the bags on her way out of the trailer park.

In a public statement, the Provo Police Department expressed condolences to the victims’ family:

“Our heartfelt condolences are with their family during this unimaginable tragedy.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review video evidence and witness statements to determine whether additional charges will follow.
