Authorities in Davis County have arrested a woman linked to a sweeping property-crime spree after her mother recognized her in a televised news report. The case, which spans dozens of gun and vehicle thefts, has rapidly evolved as investigators continue to recover stolen items and interview suspects.
Mother Alerts Detectives After Seeing News Report
Macaila Jaye Jenkins, 25, was taken into custody on charges including two counts of burglary, criminal mischief, and theft of property valued between $1,500 and $4,999. Investigators say Jenkins became a primary suspect after a FOX 13 News segment aired surveillance images seeking public assistance.
On November 5, Jenkins’ mother contacted detectives to report that she recognized both her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend in the footage. She informed investigators that the boyfriend had a history of drug use and criminal activity, which raised her concern after seeing the broadcast.
Widespread Crime Spree Under Investigation
Police have been examining a wave of break-ins and thefts involving storage units across Davis County. The crime spree includes the disappearance of approximately 30 firearms, nearly 60 stolen vehicles, and more than 300 vehicle burglaries. The Davis County Sheriff’s Office previously released surveillance stills to local media to help identify those responsible.
When officers first checked the residence where Jenkins’ mother believed she was staying, no one answered the door. However, investigators spoke with Jenkins’ father, a co-tenant, who also confirmed her identity.
Search Warrant Leads to Key Evidence
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the property, ultimately recovering clothing that matched items worn by the suspect on the night of the burglary. On Tuesday, officers returned to the home, located Jenkins, and detained her. Authorities say she later admitted to participating in the burglaries and handling stolen property.
The case remains active as investigators work to locate additional suspects and recover more stolen items. For continued updates on law enforcement actions, visit the official site of the Utah Department of Public Safety.
