A major section of State Street was shut down Tuesday evening after a shooting between two vehicles prompted a large police response and ongoing investigation.

According to Aymee Race with the Unified Police Department, the incident happened around 8286 South State Street when one car fired approximately six shots at another while both were traveling southbound.

The gunfire caused chaos in traffic and forced police to close both directions of State Street between several intersections while officers searched the scene for evidence.

Both Cars Fled the Scene

Police said both vehicles fled immediately after the shooting, and investigators have not yet located either car or confirmed whether anyone was injured.

“We don’t have any known victims at this time,” Race said. “Both vehicles left the area before officers arrived, so we’re still working to identify those involved.”

Authorities are currently searching for a dark-colored, four-door sedan, believed to be connected to the shooting.

Officers collected shell casings and surveillance footage from nearby businesses as part of the ongoing investigation.

Traffic Disruptions and Public Safety

The shooting led to a temporary closure of both northbound and southbound lanes on State Street as police secured the area. Drivers were advised to avoid the stretch of roadway for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

The Unified Police Department is urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or has dashcam footage from the area to come forward.

Call for Information
