Brandon Kay, 45, was known for being a loving husband, devoted father, caring grandfather, and a loyal friend. Whether at home, church, or work, he touched lives with his genuine nature. His family shared that he was the kind of person everyone wanted as a friend—warm, dependable, and humble.
From quietly helping people behind the scenes to supporting his loved ones without ever asking for recognition, Brandon was someone who always put others first. His family remembered him in his obituary as “the kindest, most forgiving, and selfless man.”
A Tragic and Sudden Loss
On the night of January 8, Brandon’s son heard gunshots. Concerned, Brandon stepped outside to check what was happening. According to police, his neighbour, James Joseph Rios, allegedly shot him in the stomach and then later in the head as his family tried to save him. His pet dachshund, Samson, was also tragically shot and killed during the incident.
Brandon was rushed to the hospital, but he sadly passed away from his injuries a few days later. Rios has since been charged with Aggravated Murder and several counts of Attempted Aggravated Murder.

Brandon’s passing has deeply affected his family, friends, co-workers, and the wider South Ogden community. A GoFundMe campaign set up for his funeral expenses described him as “a friend to everyone he met,” and shared how everyone who knew Brandon felt a special bond with him.
“There is a hole in everyone Brandon knew… too large for any one person to ever fill again,” his obituary read.
His love for life was evident in the time he spent with his family, whether it was riding motorcycles, skeet shooting with his sons, enjoying the outdoors, or playing with Samson.

Brandon’s dedication to his job was another big part of his life. He worked at the same machine shop for nearly 21 years, showing up every day with commitment and integrity. His co-workers and boss spoke highly of him, saying they deeply valued his loyalty and friendship.
