Man claims he killed his pregnant sister because she was 'no longer innocent' and then left pieces of her on a neighbor's steps

A 24-year-old man from Lakeville, Minnesota, has pleaded guilty to the murder of his pregnant sister, admitting to both the premeditated first-degree murder of Bethany Ann Israel and the murder of her unborn child.

Jack Joseph Ball, who dismembered his sister’s body and scattered the remains in several locations, reportedly committed the crime because he believed her pregnancy meant she was “no longer innocent.”

The Crime

Ball’s guilty plea was entered last week, as he admitted to the horrific crime, which led to the death of his 30-year-old sister and her unborn child. According to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, prosecutors have recommended a life sentence for Ball as part of the plea deal.

Ball had originally asserted a defense of mental illness but ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges. As part of the plea agreement, second-degree murder charges against him were dropped.

Discovery of the Crime

In January 2025, a grand jury indicted Ball. Law enforcement discovered “several tools and large knives, all covered in blood,” and “several dismembered body parts” inside his Lakeville home, about 23 miles south of Minneapolis. The gruesome discovery followed a chilling sequence of events:

  • Israel had gone to her brother’s home for dinner, but hours passed without communication. Concerned, their mother drove to Ball’s residence to check on the siblings.
  • Upon arriving, the mother witnessed her son fleeing the house. She entered the home and immediately saw a large amount of blood and called 911.
  • Officers arrived at the scene and found blood on the kitchen floor, a bloody saw, hatchet, and large knives, as well as a knife on the living room floor near the staircase. As they searched the house, they found dismembered body parts.
  • In a further search, police received a call from a neighbor who reported seeing a man place what appeared to be a body part on their front step. Ball was later found in the backyard of a neighboring home with a self-inflicted neck injury and was taken to a local hospital.

Motive and Mental State

In journals recovered by investigators, Ball expressed anger at his sister for being pregnant and described how her pregnancy made her “no longer innocent.” He had reportedly become increasingly upset over her condition, leading to the tragic events.

Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena condemned the actions, calling the case “deeply disturbing and horrific,” while expressing a commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their family.

Remembering Bethany Ann Israel

A GoFundMe campaign launched by Israel’s family describes her as a “cherished wife, daughter, sister, and an expectant mother.” She was remembered for her “radiant spirit and unwavering kindness.” Her family and loved ones are grappling with the unimaginable loss, and her memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew her.
