Lewis County Transit is once again on the hunt for new leadership after Executive Director Robert “Josh” Nylander stepped down just four months into the role. The agency confirmed his sudden departure in a news release on Friday, January 30, stating the decision was effective immediately.
Executive Director Steps Down After Four Months
Nylander began his tenure on September 15, 2025, following the retirement of longtime executive director Joe Clark in August. His early exit means Lewis County Transit will now be searching for its third executive director in just four months.
In a public statement, the agency said the change was made with a focus on improvement and maintaining high standards of leadership.
“This decision reflects the organization’s commitment to ongoing improvement and exemplary service to our community with the highest standards of leadership,” the agency said in its release.
Interim Director to Be Appointed
While no specific reasons were given for Nylander’s departure, Lewis County Transit assured riders and staff that service will continue without disruption. An interim executive director will be appointed soon to manage daily operations while the board conducts a full search for a new permanent leader.
The agency emphasized that rider satisfaction, service reliability, and open communication with the public and employees will remain top priorities during the transition.
Nylander’s Short-Lived Tenure
When Nylander was hired, Lewis County Transit highlighted his 14 years of experience in public transportation, including nine years at the Whatcom Transportation Authority. He had most recently served there as director of information technology.
The agency had praised his “people-centered leadership style” and his reputation for team-building through empathy and collaboration.
Despite this, Nylander’s leadership at Lewis County Transit ended far earlier than expected.
Board Thanks Nylander, Looks Ahead
Board Chair and Lewis County Commissioner Scott Brummer thanked Nylander for his efforts and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to moving forward with strength and unity.
“We thank the director for their contributions and wish them well in their future endeavors,” Brummer said. “Our team is united in moving forward, ensuring uninterrupted service for all riders and support for our dedicated employees.”
Lewis County Transit now enters another leadership transition, as the board prepares to once again search for someone to lead the organization into the future.
