For nearly half a century, Lagoon Amusement Park’s Jet Star 2 rollercoaster has been a beloved part of Utah’s summer memories. But after 49 years of loops, screams, and nostalgia, the park has announced that the iconic ride will officially retire at the end of the 2025 season.
A Utah Classic Since 1976
Jet Star 2 first opened in summer 1976, quickly earning its place as one of Lagoon’s signature attractions. Built by Schwarzkopf Industries, the same German manufacturer behind Lagoon’s Colossus: The Fire Dragon, the coaster became known for its compact steel design, tight turns, and thrilling speed that gave riders a sense of closeness to the track.
Lagoon spokesperson Adam Leishman described Jet Star 2 as “a gem among enthusiasts,” noting that it’s been one of the park’s most popular rides since its debut.
“We’re sad to see it go,” Leishman said. “Jet Star 2 has given a generation of thrills, but it’s simply reaching the end of its service life.”
A Legacy of Innovation
Schwarzkopf Industries was hailed by the American Coaster Enthusiasts as a pioneer in roller coaster engineering. The company’s designs, including Jet Star 2, helped redefine the modern thrill ride with smoother steel tracks and compact layouts that could deliver intensity without the height of traditional wooden coasters.
Jet Star 2’s unique spiral lift hill and close seating arrangement made it stand out from other coasters of its time — giving riders a fast-paced, high-G experience that remained surprisingly smooth even decades later.
A Farewell Ride for Fans
To honor the coaster’s long run, Lagoon has decided to extend its 2025 season by two weekends, allowing fans and coaster lovers to take one last ride before Jet Star 2 officially closes. The park will now remain open through November 9, weather permitting.
Many Utahns have expressed deep nostalgia over the ride’s retirement, recalling Jet Star 2 as their first “real rollercoaster” experience. From family outings to date nights, the coaster has been a rite of passage for generations of Lagoon visitors.
What Comes Next?
While the park hasn’t revealed specific details, Leishman confirmed that a new attraction will replace Jet Star 2, calling it a “thrilling” project that will carry Lagoon’s legacy of innovation forward.
The announcement comes as Lagoon continues to expand its offerings, with the new “Nutcracker” Screamin’ Swing ride already set to open in 2026. The park’s mix of nostalgia and new attractions keeps it a staple in Utah’s entertainment scene.
As Jet Star 2 prepares for its final descent, Lagoon encourages everyone to come experience the ride one last time — before it joins the ranks of Utah’s fondly remembered amusement history.
