A diesel fuel spill temporarily shut down a major section of Interstate 215 West near California Avenue on Saturday morning following a collision between a fuel tanker truck and an excavator, according to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP).

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m., prompting an immediate response from UHP, Salt Lake City Fire, and Hazmat crews. Emergency officials closed all northbound lanes of I-215 West as workers scrambled to contain the spill and prevent fuel from reaching nearby storm drains.

While the tanker’s diesel compartment was compromised, no injuries were reported from the incident. The excavator operator and tanker driver both escaped unharmed, officials confirmed.

Traffic Impact and Cleanup
Drivers heading north were diverted to I-15 at California Avenue while crews began cleanup operations, which lasted several hours. Motorists reported delays extending up to 45 minutes, particularly for those traveling toward the Salt Lake City International Airport corridor.

Crews from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Environmental Response contractors used absorbent materials and vacuum pumps to remove the contaminated fuel and soil. Hazmat specialists estimated that approximately 150 to 200 gallons of diesel leaked before the flow was stopped.

By early afternoon, the roadway was fully cleaned, inspected, and reopened around 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

A UDOT traffic camera captured the scene showing emergency vehicles positioned along the shoulder as traffic slowed through detours.

Officials urged drivers to remain cautious when traveling near construction zones and heavy equipment, especially during ongoing infrastructure work in the area.
