Two serious vehicle fires erupted on I-15 in Davis County within a 24-hour span, leaving both drivers hospitalized in critical condition and causing major freeway closures, according to officials.

Dump truck fire in West Bountiful

Late Wednesday morning, just before 11:30 a.m., a multi-vehicle crash on northbound I-15 near 400 North in West Bountiful caused a dump truck to ignite. The Utah Highway Patrol said the driver was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

The fire and crash scattered gravel across the roadway, forcing all southbound lanes and several northbound lanes to close temporarily. Crews cleared the scene and reopened the freeway by 12:30 p.m.

Around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, a car caught fire following the collision. Troopers with UHP pulled a man from the burning vehicle before firefighters extinguished the flames. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Two additional people suffered minor injuries and were treated on-scene.
