FILMéxico Film Festival Brings Contemporary Mexican Cinema to Salt Lake City

A weeklong celebration of Mexican filmmaking begins Thursday as the FILMéxico Film Festival launches its 14th annual edition in Salt Lake City. The event is a partnership between the Salt Lake Film Society, the Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City, and Artes de México en Utah.

This year’s festival opens with a screening of So Close to the Clouds, a documentary spotlighting the groundbreaking 1971 Mexican women’s soccer team that competed in the world championship. From there, the schedule features eight films — a blend of documentaries and narrative works — shown daily through Nov. 20.

Organizers say the lineup showcases “award-winning works that span from dark humor to visual poetry and cultural exploration,” emphasizing the range and depth of modern Mexican storytelling. Several screenings will include panel discussions with filmmakers, scholars, and others involved in the productions.

All films will be shown at Broadway Centre Cinemas at 111 E. Broadway, Suite 99. Tickets are priced at $7.50 per screening.
