Cristiano Ronaldo Shows Support for Portugal Teammates After Suspension Sends Him Home from International Duty

Cristiano Ronaldo has been released from the Portugal national team squad ahead of their crucial clash with Armenia. The 40-year-old forward received a straight red card during Portugal’s 2-0 defeat to Ireland, where Troy Parrott scored both goals to secure a major win for the Irish side.

The incident occurred around the 60th minute when Ronaldo was dismissed for elbowing defender Dara O’Shea. This moment marked a historic low for the Al-Nassr striker, as it was his first red card in international football.

His suspension rules him out of today’s match, and under FIFA rules, a straight red card triggers a two-game international ban — meaning Ronaldo could also miss Portugal’s 2026 World Cup opening match if they advance without entering the playoffs.

Ronaldo’s Comments Before the Ireland Game

Ironically, Ronaldo had promised to behave before the Ireland matchup, telling reporters he would be a “good boy” and expressing how much he enjoys playing in front of Irish fans. He said:

“I really like the fans here. Their support for their national team is wonderful. It’s a pleasure to play here again. I hope they don’t boo me too much tomorrow. I promise to try to be a good boy.”

Ronaldo Supports Team Through Social Media

Despite being forced to watch from home, Ronaldo showed his support with an Instagram message on Sunday morning. His post read:
“Go team! All together today and forever! For Portugal and for our flag!”

Goncalo Ramos Expected to Replace Ronaldo

With Ronaldo unavailable, Goncalo Ramos is likely to take the striker role against Armenia. The PSG forward has been Ronaldo’s back-up throughout the qualifying rounds, appearing from the bench in all five games so far.

Although he has not scored yet in this qualifying campaign, he will see this matchup as a strong chance to open his account.

Armenia have struggled in Group F, losing four of their five games and conceding 10 goals, including a heavy 5-0 defeat to Portugal in September.

Bruno Fernandes Returns for Portugal

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will be relieved to welcome back Bruno Fernandes, who missed the Ireland match due to suspension. Fernandes is expected to return straight into the starting lineup against Armenia.

Even though Portugal sit at the top of Group F, their position is not secure. Their lead has narrowed to just two points after a 2-2 draw with Hungary and the recent loss to Ireland. Martinez is expected to field a strong XI to avoid any further setbacks.

Group F Standings: Tight Race Ahead

In the other fixture, Ireland face Hungary, separated by just a single point. Ireland’s recent wins over Portugal and Armenia have pushed them back into playoff contention, but they must secure another victory today to climb into second place.

Ronaldo Shifts Focus Back to Al-Nassr

Ronaldo is now preparing to return to club football as Al-Nassr meet Al-Khaleej next weekend. Under coach Jorge Jesus, Al-Nassr have won all eight Saudi Pro League matches this season.

Ronaldo has been in outstanding form, scoring nine league goals, trailing only Joao Felix, who leads the scoring chart with 10 goals. Al-Khaleej sit sixth and have picked up two wins from their four away fixtures.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s unexpected red card has temporarily sidelined him from Portugal’s World Cup qualifiers, placing additional pressure on the national team as they fight to stay atop Group F.

While Portugal regroup for their clash with Armenia, Ronaldo turns his attention back to Al-Nassr, where he continues to shine. The suspension may disrupt his international momentum, but his club form shows he remains a dominant force on the field.
