Even Downdetector, which tracks real-time service interruptions, was briefly inaccessible for some users. Additionally, certain NJ Transit digital tools stopped working during the disruption.

OpenAI later noted that both ChatGPT and its Sora video app had returned to normal operation after experiencing issues tied to a “third-party service provider.”

What Caused the Cloudflare Outage?

A Configuration File Error Triggered the Breakdown

Cloudflare explained that the root cause was a configuration file—responsible for handling threat traffic—that grew to an unexpectedly large size. This oversized file caused a crash in the system that manages traffic flow across several Cloudflare services.

The company detected a surge in unusual traffic around 5:20 a.m. ET, which contributed to the instability.

No Signs of Cyberattack

Cloudflare confirmed that there was no evidence of hacking or malicious activity behind the incident. The disruption stemmed solely from an internal system failure.

The company acknowledged the seriousness of the downtime, stating:
“Any outage is unacceptable given the critical nature of our services. We sincerely apologize to our customers and the broader internet community for today’s disruption.”
