The BYU–Utah rivalry, often dubbed the “Holy War,” once again turned LaVell Edwards Stadium into the heart of college football passion on Saturday night. For many fans, it was more than just a game — it was a family tradition, a lifelong ritual, and a celebration of Utah sports culture.
The scene outside the stadium resembled a massive block party as No. 15 BYU faced off against No. 23 Utah in front of a roaring crowd. Amy Chatelain and her siblings spent hours preparing, as they have for years. “Our grandma taught us to love this rivalry,” she said. “We’ve been going to games since we were little. We’ve had season tickets forever,” added her sister Jenn Alba.
While the crowd was predominantly blue, a fair number of Utah fans proudly showed their red. Among them were best friends Kru Smith and Bryson Lee, who supported opposite sides. “I like Utah because of my family — my uncle went there,” Smith said. “But we’ve also got ties to BYU.” Lee, a Cougar fan, laughed, “Friends 364 days out of the year — not on this one.”
The rivalry has also tested romantic relationships, though often with a playful twist. Davis Ayala, a Utah fan, and Allyx Derrick, a BYU supporter, said they embrace the good-natured competition. “Her dad’s a Utah fan, so he likes me,” Ayala joked. “It’s fun having a little rivalry even though we still like each other.”
Fans described the atmosphere as electric and steeped in nostalgia. “It’s crazy to be out here on game day — the energy is unreal,” said Smith. Lee echoed the sentiment: “The atmosphere at LaVell Edwards Stadium is absolutely incredible. I’m just grateful to be here.”
For Derrick, game day means connection. “It builds so many memories,” she said. “My family has always been BYU fans, so it’s special to share this with them.”
Despite the fierce competition, fans on both sides emphasized respect and shared excitement for the sport. “I just want a good game,” Derrick said. “Good game and a Utah win,” Ayala teased — to which Derrick shot back, “No, go Cougs!”
The night ended in elation for Cougar fans as BYU edged Utah 24–21, marking their third consecutive victory in one of college football’s oldest and most passionate rivalries.
