Utah State University has officially appointed Brad L. Mortensen, Ph.D., as its next president, following a unanimous vote by the Utah Board of Higher Education.
Mortensen, a proud Utah State alumnus, currently serves as the president of Weber State University—a position he has held for six years. His transition to USU leadership will begin early next month, succeeding Elizabeth Cantwell, who left earlier this year to take over as president of Washington State University.

In a statement following his appointment, Mortensen shared his enthusiasm for returning to his alma mater:

From the three generations of my family who lived in Cache Valley before moving to Idaho to the five Aggie alumni in my immediate family, I am deeply committed to ensuring the impact of our university continues to rise.”
Mortensen’s family roots in northern Utah run deep, and his leadership vision emphasizes strengthening USU’s statewide influence through collaboration, research, and innovation.

During his 21-year career at Weber State University, Mortensen has been recognized for fostering academic growth and expanding partnerships across state and federal levels.
Under his leadership, the university launched the Miller Advanced Research and Solutions (MARS) Center, a facility developed in collaboration with the Utah Legislature, the U.S. Air Force, and key players in the aerospace and defense industry.
He also oversaw the creation of several graduate programs, including the Doctor of Nursing Practice, reflecting his focus on expanding access to high-quality professional education.

With Mortensen’s upcoming departure, the Utah Board of Higher Education confirmed that a national search for Weber State University’s next president will begin soon.
