OGDEN, Utah — A second juvenile suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Mason Caballero outside Ben Lomond High School earlier this month. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, who fled to Colorado after the incident, was arrested in Denver and has since been transported back to Utah to face charges.
According to the Ogden City Police Department, the second suspect was apprehended on October 13 by local law enforcement in Denver after a multi-state investigation led authorities to the suspect’s location. The individual was later returned to Utah, where they are being held in a juvenile detention center while prosecutors determine the appropriate charges.
This arrest comes just days after police arrested the first juvenile suspect on October 10, following an extensive investigation into the deadly shooting that occurred near the high school campus.
The shooting took place outside Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, shocking the community and sparking an outpouring of grief and concern among students, parents, and local residents. Mason Caballero, the victim, was a 16-year-old student who, according to friends and family, was well-liked and active in his school community.
Ogden police have not released specific details about the suspects’ identities due to their ages but confirmed that both individuals are juveniles. Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the shooting and whether it was connected to any prior disputes or gang activity.
In a public statement, the Ogden City Police Department expressed appreciation for the assistance of local, state, and federal partners who contributed to the investigation and coordinated efforts across state lines to locate and arrest the second suspect.
“We want to thank all our partner agencies and the Ogden community for their cooperation and support as we worked to bring both suspects into custody,” the department said.
Community members and school officials have held vigils and memorials in honor of Mason, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to keep schools safe and prevent youth violence.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue to gather evidence and review potential witness accounts. Authorities say updates on charges and court proceedings will be released as the case progresses.
