Altercation at Highland High Basketball Game Leads to Man Banned From Campus

A man has been banned from Highland High School’s campus and all sporting events after an altercation involving a student during a basketball game in Salt Lake City, according to school officials.

The incident happened Tuesday before Highland’s home game against East High School. The Salt Lake City School District said School Resource Officers (SROs) who were present at the game responded immediately once the confrontation occurred inside the gym.

District officials confirmed that the man involved in the altercation was removed from the gymnasium and is now barred from returning to the Highland High School campus or attending any future athletic events hosted there.

Student Suffered Minor Injuries, Police Investigating

According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the student sustained “simple” injuries in the incident. Authorities have not released further details about the nature of those injuries or the circumstances that led up to the confrontation.

It is currently unclear whether the student involved is enrolled at Highland High School, East High School, or another school entirely. Police say that detail remains under review as part of their investigation.

The Salt Lake City Police Department, working in coordination with the school district, is now gathering evidence, reviewing statements, and assessing video where available to determine whether criminal charges will be recommended. More information on how the department handles school-related incidents is available through the Salt Lake City Police website.

District: “Any act of physical harm toward a child is unacceptable”

In a public statement following the incident, the Salt Lake City School District emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe environment at all school events.

“The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority, and any act of physical harm toward a child is completely unacceptable,” the district said.

The district has not publicly identified the man or the student, citing privacy and ongoing investigative considerations. No timeline has yet been given for when a charging decision might be announced.

As winter sports continue across the district, officials say they will maintain a visible security presence and continue enforcing strict zero-tolerance standards for violence at school-sponsored events.
