A small fire broke out at an industrial facility in the Tacoma Tideflats area on Wednesday morning, leading to a full hazardous materials (hazmat) response by firefighters.
Fire breaks out at industrial site
The Tacoma Fire Department said they got a call at 10:19 a.m. about a fire in the 1900 block of Marine View Drive. Since the area has industrial operations and the fire could involve hazardous materials, they sent a hazmat team as a safety measure.
Workers quickly put out the flames
Before firefighters reached the spot, employees at the facility had already managed to put out the fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the incident. According to the fire department’s update on X (formerly Twitter), the fire had already been extinguished when crews arrived.
Cause of the fire under control
Officials believe the fire may have started when a welding torch accidentally ignited some fuel, causing a small fire to break out. The fire was minor, but the potential risk led to extra precautions.
Safety checks continue
Even though the fire is out, firefighters are not taking any chances. One engine remains at the scene to make sure the fire doesn’t reignite and to monitor for any lingering danger.
