One of Tacoma’s newest fast-casual spots has unexpectedly shut down. Big Chicken, the fried chicken chain co-founded by NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, has officially closed its doors in Tacoma less than two years after opening.
Big Chicken Closes Tacoma Location
Located at 2601 N. Pearl St., the Big Chicken restaurant posted signs on its windows saying, “We have permanently closed our doors. Thank you for the memories and for supporting us.” The signs confirmed what many fans feared — the location is no longer in operation.
The Tacoma branch opened in 2024 with much excitement, bringing O’Neal’s favourite childhood comfort foods to the Pacific Northwest. Known for its bold and fun menu, Big Chicken offered over-the-top fried chicken sandwiches stacked with toppings like mac and cheese, onion rings, and cheese curds. Guests could also enjoy crispy tenders and thick milkshakes.
No Comment from Local Store
Attempts to reach staff at the Tacoma location were unsuccessful, and no official reason has been shared for the closure. It’s unclear if it was due to business performance, staffing issues, or other challenges.
Big Chicken Still Running in Washington
Even though Tacoma’s outlet is gone, fans of the brand can still visit other Big Chicken restaurants in Washington. There are locations in Seattle, Renton, and Mukilteo, all still serving up the signature bold flavours that define the chain.
About Big Chicken
Founded in 2018, Big Chicken was created to combine Shaq’s larger-than-life personality with his favourite food memories from childhood. The chain quickly expanded across the U.S., offering a unique twist on classic fried chicken.
Fried Chicken Fans Still Have Plenty of Options

- Wingstop – A go-to for wings in a variety of flavours.
