SALT LAKE CITY — Fire crews in Salt Lake City swiftly contained a fast-moving blaze that tore through a detached garage Sunday afternoon, sending thick black smoke billowing across the neighborhood near 1055 S. Major Street.

The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m., and when firefighters arrived, the garage was already fully engulfed in flames. Responders quickly elevated the situation to a second alarm as crews made an aggressive interior attack to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes and businesses.

“We got a large majority of the flames and smoke knocked down within probably the first five minutes, and had it completely under control within 10,” said Capt. Shaun Mumedy with the Salt Lake City Fire Department. “It was a pretty aggressive fire attack. We were able to keep it confined to just that area.”

No injuries were reported, though a few nearby trees caught fire before the blaze was extinguished. Firefighters credited their quick response and teamwork for preventing further damage.

Investigators remained at the scene into the afternoon, photographing and collecting evidence to determine the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.

Fire officials used the incident as a reminder for residents to check smoke alarms and ensure all fire safety equipment in their homes is functioning properly.
