CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. — A mass shooting Saturday night at Lincoln University, a historically Black college in Pennsylvania, has left multiple victims and prompted a large police response, officials confirmed.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office said the shooting occurred near the school’s football field around 9 p.m., during homecoming weekend festivities that included a tailgate and yardfest event.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the campus and surrounding areas as the investigation continues.
Multiple victims, investigation underway
Officials have not released the exact number or condition of the victims, but Chester County Commissioner Eric Roe posted on Facebook asking the public to pray for students and staff at the university.
Local witnesses told CBS News Philadelphia that they saw CPR being performed on at least one individual at the scene. Police and emergency responders quickly secured the area as students and attendees were evacuated.
Homecoming celebration turns tragic
Founded in 1854, Lincoln University is the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU). The weekend’s celebrations had drawn hundreds of alumni, students, and families to campus, located about 50 miles southwest of Philadelphia.
The shooting reportedly occurred just as the school’s homecoming tailgate event was wrapping up. Videos and social media posts from the scene show chaos as students ran for safety while police cars and ambulances flooded the campus.
Officials urge calm, await updates
Law enforcement agencies, including Pennsylvania State Police and Chester County detectives, are leading the investigation. No arrests or suspect descriptions have been released as of late Saturday evening.
“This is a devastating night for our Lincoln family,” one university staff member said. “We ask for patience and prayers while we await official updates.”
This is a developing story, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
