A late-night Halloween celebration in West Valley City turned deadly early Saturday when gunfire erupted outside a home, leaving one man dead and a teenager hospitalized, according to police.

Drive-by shooting turns deadly

Officers were called to the 4700 block of Palmer Drive around 12:40 a.m., where a large party of teenagers and young adults had gathered. Police said Allen Montelongo, 18, of Salt Lake City, drove by the house and opened fire on a crowd standing in the street.

A 16-year-old boy from Sandy was struck multiple times during the shooting. Someone in the group reportedly returned fire, hitting Montelongo and causing him to crash his car into a fence nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teenage victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

Witnesses describe chaotic aftermath

Nearby resident Marci Bonham told KSL-TV she heard several sharp popping sounds, followed by what “sounded like garbage cans rolling over.” When she stepped outside, she saw the crashed vehicle and a body on the ground.

“There was a group of younger girls screaming and upset,” Bonham recalled. “Some were saying they wanted to help, others were shouting, ‘We’ve got to get out of here.’”

Police said the shooting appeared to be targeted, and that “all relevant parties have been identified.” No additional arrests have been announced.

Community shaken by violence

Neighbors said the shooting has left them uneasy. “It’s kind of disturbing to think that a bullet could come flying and hit your house—or you,” Bonham said. “There’s too much violence, too much gun violence.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the deadly exchange.
