Mom shot dead while sleeping next to her 7-year-old and husband during home invasion

A horrifying case from Washington state has shocked the nation. A 24-year-old man named Christopher Johnson is set to plead guilty for murdering a woman while she was sleeping beside her husband and young son during a brutal home invasion. This tragedy took place during a wave of violent robberies that targeted Asian families across several states.

Home Invasion Turns Deadly

On August 19, 2022, Johnson and two others broke into the home of 36-year-old Irah Sok in Everett, Washington. They entered just before 3 a.m., a time chosen to catch families off guard. The attackers pretended to be police officers to gain access. Once inside, they zip-tied Sok’s husband and forced him to the ground, while their 7-year-old son lay next to them in bed.

Johnson then shot Sok in the head as she slept, killing her instantly. The intruders stole luxury items and valuables before fleeing the scene. Luckily, the young boy was not physically harmed, and his father managed to escape and seek help after the attackers left.

Part of a Larger Crime Network

Johnson is not just being held responsible for this one murder. He has already pleaded guilty to several federal crimes tied to a violent robbery ring that operated throughout Washington and even into Arizona. Prosecutors say Johnson played a leadership role in the group, which carried out burglaries, kidnappings, and armed robberies.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the group mainly targeted Asian households, wrongly believing they were more vulnerable. They used social media to select their victims and often struck between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Their method involved disguises, masks, and zip ties, and they didn’t hesitate to use violence — even against children as young as 9.

Victim Was a Beloved Photographer

Irah Sok was a respected and well-loved maternity and newborn photographer in her community. She had recently opened her own studio and was known for her warm spirit and talent. Her sudden death has left a deep void in the lives of her family, clients, and friends.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Johnson pleaded guilty to federal racketeering charges (RICO) and is awaiting sentencing, scheduled for May 6. He is also expected to plead guilty to second-degree murder in Snohomish County Superior Court on February 17.

Authorities continue to investigate others involved in the crimes, and more charges could follow for Johnson’s accomplices.

This tragic incident has raised concerns about safety, hate-driven crimes, and how organized criminal networks are using social media to select targets. It’s a grim reminder of the impact such crimes have not only on victims, but also on entire communities.
