A heartbreaking case from Michigan has reached a major turning point, bringing renewed attention to the devastating loss of a young child and the long road to justice.
Two men who were teenagers at the time of the crime have now been convicted of first-degree murder for the death of 7-year-old Ariah Jackson, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while returning home from school. The verdict has shaken the community and reopened painful memories for the family.
What Happened on the Day of the Shooting
The incident took place on the afternoon of March 18, 2022, in Pontiac. Ariah Jackson had just been dropped off from her school bus along with her sister and two cousins. Her mother was waiting in her car at the bus stop, ready to drive the children home.
As they started their short journey, Ariah’s mother noticed an orange SUV following them. According to court records and reporting by WDIV, the SUV was driven by Justin Rouser, while Jajuan McDonald sat inside with a gun.
Moments later, McDonald opened fire. He shot eight times into the car carrying the mother and four young girls. One bullet grazed the mother, and another struck Ariah in the back of her head. The other children were physically unharmed but traumatised by what they witnessed.
A Family’s Desperate Effort to Save Ariah
After the shooting, Ariah’s father rushed outside when he realised something was wrong. He pulled Ariah from the car and carried her inside the house as emergency services were called. Deputies arrived quickly and rushed the injured child to the hospital.
Despite doctors’ efforts, Ariah died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The loss of the 7-year-old girl deeply affected not only her family but also the wider community, who struggled to understand how such violence could touch children simply heading home from school.
Arrests and Criminal Charges
Police acted swiftly after the shooting. Justin Rouser was tracked down and arrested shortly after the incident when he tried to flee from officers. Jajuan McDonald turned himself in on March 28, 2022.
Both men were charged with serious offences, including:
- First-degree murder
- Four counts of attempted murder
- Five counts of felony firearm
At the time of the shooting, McDonald was 17 years old and Rouser was 19. Even though they were teenagers, prosecutors pursued adult charges due to the severity of the crime.

On Wednesday, a jury found both men guilty on all charges. Now aged 21 and 23, McDonald and Rouser face life sentences in prison for the murder of Ariah Jackson.
