The Struggles of Homeless Families
For Micheal Najera, his journey through homelessness has been marked by profound loss and hardship. “I’ve lost a friend trying to stay warm. Carbon monoxide killed her. I was pretty messed up myself,” Najera said, reflecting on the struggles he faced while living on the streets.
Najera, along with his partner Sky Standal and their four-month-old daughter, Miciah, found themselves without a stable place to live. Najera explained, “Our resources kind of ran out… but it’s just a burden. I don’t want to feel like a burden on friends and family.” When Miciah was born, Najera knew he had to fight for a better future for her. He explained, “This was something that I have to fight for.”
The Nomad Alliance’s Mobile Shelter Bus
Thanks to organizations like Nomad Alliance, families like Najera’s now have access to a critical resource—the mobile shelter bus. The bus was renovated to provide a safe, warm space with new features, including bathrooms, showers, and solar panels.
Executive Director of Nomad Alliance, Kseniya Kniazeza, shared that Miciah was one of the first guests to experience the bus while it was still being renovated. “She was one of the first guests that we’ve had on here,” Kniazeza said, highlighting the personal and community-focused nature of the service.
Why the Mobile Shelter Bus Matters
The mobile shelter bus isn’t just a temporary fix; it’s a lifeline for those who are chronically unsheltered. People who are homeless often have a specific area they feel safe in, and the mobile bus ensures they don’t have to walk miles for shelter.

As temperatures continue to drop in Utah, the Nomad Alliance bus is available 24/7 to provide families like Najera’s with a warm, safe place to sleep.

Volunteers have played an essential role in the success of the mobile shelter bus. Construction supervisor Brian Drown, who once experienced homelessness himself, shared his experience of giving back.
He said, “They helped me get my stimulus check that I didn’t think I was ever going to get… and to say thanks, they were asking for help to build a shower on the back of the bus, so I told them I’d help.” This sense of giving back is integral to the success of the initiative, as community members are directly involved in making the mobile shelter bus a functional and welcoming space for those in need.

Nomad Alliance is committed to helping the homeless community not just by providing shelter but by fostering a sense of hope and belonging.
The mobile shelter bus will remain operational until May, and plans are in place to continue supporting those in need. The organization hopes to expand its services and provide more resources to people experiencing homelessness in Salt Lake City.
