A heartbreaking case of alleged elder neglect has come to light after a bedbound elderly man was rushed to hospital in critical condition. What doctors discovered shocked even experienced medical staff, and now his own daughter is facing serious criminal charges.

Elderly man admitted to hospital in critical condition
According to a general sessions docket obtained by WATE, the 74-year-old man was taken to hospital on January 2. Medical staff quickly realised his condition was far worse than expected. His blood sugar level was recorded at over 600, which is dangerously high and can be life-threatening.
Even more concerning were the physical injuries found on his body. Doctors reported that he had severe pressure sores, also known as bedsores, that had progressed to the point where muscle tissue was exposed. In the most disturbing finding, three of his vertebrae were reportedly visible due to the depth of the wounds.
The man has not been publicly named. It is known that he suffered a stroke around eight years ago and became fully bedbound roughly six months before his hospital admission. This made him completely dependent on others for care, movement, hygiene, medication, and medical follow-up.
Adult Protective Services alerted authorities
Law enforcement became involved in the case on January 13, after adult protective services referred the situation for further investigation. This referral came after concerns were raised about the man’s condition and whether he was receiving proper care at home.
Investigators later identified the man’s primary caregiver as his daughter, Misty McDaniel, 43. Reports say she and her husband had been caring for the elderly man since 2018. However, evidence gathered during the investigation painted a troubling picture of ongoing neglect.
Authorities allege that the man had not been taken to see a doctor for wound care or diabetes treatment for at least six months. During that time, his condition appears to have steadily worsened, leading to the extreme medical emergency that resulted in his hospitalisation.
Missed medication and lack of basic care
Investigators also found that McDaniel allegedly failed to give her father his prescribed medication on a daily basis. She is accused of not regularly checking his blood sugar levels, which is critical for anyone living with diabetes, especially when they are elderly and immobile.
What raised further concern was the fact that a supply of the man’s medication was reportedly found in McDaniel’s bedroom. This suggests that the medication was available but not being properly administered. For a bedbound patient with diabetes and serious health conditions, this lack of care can quickly lead to devastating consequences.
Medical experts often stress that bedsores of this severity do not develop overnight. They typically result from prolonged pressure on the skin, lack of repositioning, poor hygiene, and inadequate nutrition or hydration. This has added weight to the allegations that the neglect occurred over a long period of time.
Serious charge filed against daughter
As a result of the investigation, Misty McDaniel has been arrested and charged with aggravated neglect of an elderly or vulnerable adult resulting in serious bodily injury. This is a serious charge that reflects the severity of the harm suffered by the victim.
According to WATE, the elderly man remains in critical condition. He has already undergone numerous surgeries and medical procedures in an effort to treat his wounds and stabilise his health. His recovery is expected to be long and difficult, and his overall prognosis has not been made public.
