Community Action Services Closes Springville Pantry Amid Funding and Space Challenges

The Community Action Services and Food Bank has officially closed its Springville pantry, a key resource for families facing food insecurity in Utah County. The closure stems from the loss of its operating space at the Early Learning Essentials facility and ongoing concerns over federal funding freezes.

The pantry, which operated out of a 500–600 square-foot space provided by the nonprofit learning center, served hundreds of local families each month. CEO Tom Hogan confirmed that Early Learning Essentials had to repurpose the area as part of a larger state property transition.

“They have a lease on a building in downtown Provo that the state owns, and the state notified them that they’re going to reclaim that property,” Hogan explained. “And so it just kind of moves downhill.”

Expanded Services in Provo

To help offset the closure, Community Action Services has expanded hours at its Provo pantry, allowing residents to access food assistance later into the evening. Wednesday night operations will continue — a service modeled after what proved most helpful to Springville residents.

“We kept Provo open on Wednesday nights to try and have compatible service,” Hogan said.

Searching for a New Home

While the Springville closure is temporary, Hogan said the organization is actively looking for a new location that fits both its budget and community needs. Until then, families in need are encouraged to visit nearby locations in Provo, Heber City, Coalville, or Oakley.

Despite the setback, Community Action Services plans to maintain its partnership with the Springville Kiwanis Club, particularly for its annual Christmas food drive, which provides essential support to families during the holiday season.

“We’re going to have to watch the area in Springville and make a move when we can to get back into the area,” Hogan added.
