Two employees at Academy Park Elementary in West Valley City were injured Thursday during an incident involving a student who officials say was “in crisis.” The Granite School District confirmed the situation late Thursday night, describing it as a behavioral emergency that escalated as staff attempted to support the child.
The student reportedly began acting aggressively toward school employees, prompting staff to attempt de-escalation and intervention. According to the district, the student eventually walked off campus while employees continued encouraging them to return to school grounds.
District officials say the injuries occurred off campus, though they did not release details about the nature of the confrontation or the severity of the injuries. They did confirm that the student was responsible for the incident.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly afterward, providing medical care to both employees. The district says the injured staff members are expected to fully recover.

School Working With Family After Behavioral Emergency
In an email sent to school parents Thursday evening, Academy Park Elementary principal Heidi Draper said the administration is in active communication with the student’s family “to address the behavior” and ensure additional steps are taken to support the student going forward.
Situations involving students in crisis have prompted statewide conversations about classroom safety, staffing levels, and mental health resources. The Utah State Board of Education continues to encourage districts to expand behavioral support teams and intervention programs to reduce risk during similar events.
The district did not say whether additional disciplinary or safety measures will follow, citing confidentiality laws surrounding student information.
