A 22-year-old Murray man is facing a series of serious felony charges after allegedly forcing his way into his ex-girlfriend’s Kearns home and shooting her multiple times, along with another man inside the residence. Prosecutors say the incident stemmed from escalating threats made throughout the day and culminated in a violent confrontation early on Nov. 26.
Lucas Darell Patrick, 22, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with two counts of attempted aggravated murder and aggravated burglary, both first-degree felonies. Additional charges include possession of a firearm by a restricted person and obstruction of justice, second-degree felonies, as well as domestic violence committed in the presence of a child.
Confrontation Escalates After Repeated Threats
According to charging documents, Patrick drove to his former girlfriend’s home near 5500 W. Nautilus Drive around 1:30 a.m. after a day filled with arguments and hostile phone calls. Investigators say that during the final call before the shooting, Patrick made a direct threat, telling her he was “coming over to shoot you.”
When Patrick arrived, he allegedly entered the home without permission and began arguing with the woman. As the confrontation grew heated, prosecutors say Patrick moved toward the front door, turned back toward the woman and two others inside, and opened fire.
One witness reported hearing Patrick claim he had “people outside waiting on his call,” boasting about what he was capable of. Another witness told police that Patrick warned the woman earlier to get her friends and young son out of the home because he intended to “spray” the residence.
Victims Seriously Injured, Child Present During Gunfire
The woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her chest, back, arm, and leg. A second victim—a man inside the home—was shot in the right thigh. A 4-year-old child was inside the house during the attack but was not physically harmed.
According to police, the man who drove Patrick to the home later told investigators that Patrick came running out after the shooting, yelling, “I killed them.”
Prosecutors Seek No-Bail Hold
Given the severity of the charges and the nature of the alleged threats, prosecutors have asked that Patrick be held without bail in the Salt Lake County Jail while awaiting trial.
The incident has added to a growing number of violent domestic cases under review by local authorities. Court documents state that investigators recovered information confirming Patrick made multiple threatening statements before the shooting, as well as evidence suggesting he attempted to minimize his involvement after the incident.
The full case will proceed to a preliminary hearing in the coming weeks.
