The Utah Mammoth got a show Friday night — and so did Nick Schmaltz’s grandpa.

The 29-year-old forward erupted for three goals, earning the first home hat trick in Utah Mammoth history and leading his team to a 6–3 victory over the San Jose Sharks at the Delta Center. Fans celebrated by showering the ice with hats — a first for Utah’s new NHL franchise.

Schmaltz’s performance broke open early. After missing a shot in the opening minute, he stayed aggressive, scoring twice within four minutes — at 9:39 and 13:31 of the first period — the fastest pair of goals by one player in team history.

“You’re doing the right thing, and it will come,” said head coach Andre Tourigny, recalling his conversation with Schmaltz the day before. “It was only a matter of time.”

The Sharks rallied to tie it 2–2 in the second period, but Liam O’Brien, in his first game wearing a Utah jersey, regained the lead before intermission.

Less than a minute into the third period, Schmaltz completed the hat trick on a setup from Clayton Keller, who collected three assists on the night.

“It was awesome — especially in front of our home fans,” Schmaltz said. “And shout out to my grandpa. He’s watched me play twice — once in Arizona, once here — and he’s seen a hat trick both times. Pretty special.”

Keller and Michael Carcone each scored late to seal the 6–3 win, marking Utah’s best offensive performance so far this season. Schmaltz and Keller finished with four points apiece, powering a confident display that had the Delta Center crowd on its feet.

The hat trick was just the second in Utah NHL history, following Barrett Hayton’s three-goal game last season in Las Vegas.

The Mammoth (now 3–2) will wrap up their weekend homestand Sunday at 5 p.m. MDT against the Boston Bruins.
