As Thanksgiving approaches, nearly 25% of Idaho residents are expected to be on the move this week, most of them by car, according to AAA. With travel volumes rising sharply, the Idaho State Police (ISP) is launching an expanded enforcement push across major highways.
ISP Launches Thanksgiving Weekend Enforcement Operation
Focus Areas: Interstate 84 & Active Construction Zones
Trooper Eric Cantrell described this seasonal enforcement effort as their annual “turkey trot”, noting that the days surrounding Thanksgiving—especially Wednesday and Sunday—are among the busiest for Idaho highways.
To handle increased traffic, troopers will be stationed along Interstate 84 and other busy travel corridors. Additional support will come from sheriff’s offices in Cassia, Minidoka, Jerome, and Gooding counties, all participating in the heightened patrol activity.
Ride-Along Shows Active Traffic Stops
During a brief 15-minute ride-along, multiple stops were made as officers worked to ensure drivers complied with speed limits, construction zone rules, and other traffic laws. Cantrell emphasized that maintaining safety during the heavy travel rush is their top priority.
Officers Stress Safe Driving in Construction Zones
Cantrell urged drivers to remain alert—especially as Idaho’s numerous construction zones continue to shift speed limits and traffic patterns.
He reminded motorists that distracted or inattentive driving can easily lead to dangerous situations when speed limits change suddenly.
“Just stay aware of what’s happening outside your windows,” Cantrell said. “Don’t get zoned out.”
ISP’s Safety Reminders for Thanksgiving Travelers
Idaho State Police are urging all drivers to:
- Wear seatbelts
- Avoid impaired driving
- Follow posted speed limits
- Stay off mobile phones
The overarching goal for the weekend: zero fatal crashes.
Cantrell added, “There will be lots of cars and lots of traffic. We’re here to help people reach their destinations safely.”
