Josh Allen Given a Hero’s Welcome Upon Arrival in Wyoming

LARAMIE — The speech was short, but the impact of Josh Allen’s career at the University of Wyoming will last for generations. On Saturday afternoon, more than 26,000 fans inside War Memorial Stadium erupted in cheers as a black curtain slowly rose from the west stands.

Behind it, Allen’s name—displayed in large, gold lettering—was revealed as a permanent part of the 75-year-old stadium. His iconic No. 17 jersey, which he wore during his college career, has now been officially retired and will never be assigned to another player.

Allen Shares His Gratitude

Addressing the crowd, the Buffalo Bills quarterback and reigning NFL Most Valuable Player expressed heartfelt appreciation.
“Thank you to everyone who came out tonight. This honor means so much to me,” Allen said. He thanked former coaches Craig Bohl and Brent Vigen, former teammates, and the loyal Wyoming fan base that supported him from the start.
He added, “I’m blessed to represent this university and this beautiful state.”

A Look Back at Allen’s Wyoming Career

During his time with the Cowboys from 2015 to 2017, Allen threw for 5,066 yards and 44 touchdowns, while adding 767 rushing yards and 12 rushing scores. His standout play helped Wyoming reach the Mountain West Championship Game in his sophomore year.

Allen went from an overlooked junior college athlete from tiny Firebaugh, California, to becoming the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the highest draft selection in Wyoming history.

Despite being dismissed by many programs—even his hometown team Fresno State—Wyoming recognized his potential and offered him the opportunity he needed.

A Special Moment for the Fans

Allen couldn’t leave the stage without one final message that electrified the crowd.
“I love you guys. Thank you, God bless, Go Pokes—and it will always suck to be a CSU Ram,” he joked, drawing huge applause from the Wyoming faithful.

A Day to Remember

The celebration marked a historic return for the star quarterback, who continues to make the Wyoming community proud both on and off the field. His jersey retirement cements his place as one of the most influential players in the program’s history.

Josh Allen’s jersey retirement symbolizes more than athletic success—it represents perseverance, loyalty, and the powerful bond between an athlete and the community that believed in him.
