Popular California High School Football Coach Responds After Announcing His Firing

Coronado (California) is coming off a 6-4 overall record, a season that included a trip to the CIF San Diego Section postseason and recognition with a team sportsmanship award.

Despite these accomplishments, the Islanders have officially chosen to move forward without their head football coach.

Kurt Hines Confirms His Dismissal on Social Media

Coach Fired After First-Round Playoff Loss

Head coach Kurt Hines revealed in a video posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account that he has been relieved of his duties at Coronado.

The announcement came shortly after the team’s 35-14 loss to La Jolla Country Day in the opening round of the Division IV playoffs.

In his emotional video message, Hines said,

“Probably shouldn’t be making this video right now. But as you can see, I just got fired. No joke, no April Fools.”

He went on to express gratitude for his time with the program:

“We had a good season—6-4 overall and a playoff berth. I’ve spent nine years at Coronado, pouring everything into these kids. Coaching here has been an honor and a blessing. My 28th year of coaching just finished, and I know I’ll end up somewhere else.”

A Look Back at Hines’ Tenure in Coronado

Hines joined Coronado in 2017, compiling a 56-50 record over his nine-year run. Under his leadership, the Islanders reached the California CIF playoffs every year, except in 2020 when pandemic restrictions limited the schedule to five games.

His time at Coronado was marked by steady improvement, postseason consistency, and strong relationships with players and staff.
