Bagley Cartoon- “The Smell Test”

Bagley Cartoon — “The Smell Test”

A Pulitzer Prize finalist and one of America’s longest-serving editorial cartoonists, Pat Bagley continues his sharp political commentary in The Salt Lake Tribune with “The Smell Test.”

Bagley has spent more than 45 years at The Tribune, producing over 6,000 cartoons that blend humor, satire, and civic critique. His work often targets Utah politics, national leadership, and social issues, using a distinct style that’s both biting and thought-provoking.

His illustrations have appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and Los Angeles Times, and are syndicated in over 450 newspapers nationwide.

Born in Utah and raised in Oceanside, California, Bagley graduated from Brigham Young University in 1978 with a degree in political science. A former missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he later described himself as retired from the church but “not bitter.”

Bagley’s enduring influence has made him a fixture in American editorial art — one of just a handful of political cartoonists still working at major metropolitan newspapers.
