TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with a shooting that left another teenager injured during a large fight outside a Taylorsville business last week.
According to the Taylorsville Police Department, the shooting occurred Friday afternoon in the parking lot near 5571 S. Redwood Road, where officers responded to reports of a violent altercation involving as many as 20 teens. Witnesses told police that gunshots were fired during the fight.
When officers arrived, they found a 14-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, and officials said his injuries were not life-threatening.
The incident prompted the Granite School District to issue safety protocols across multiple nearby schools, including Taylorsville High School, as a precaution.
Over the weekend, investigators followed several leads that led to the arrest of the 16-year-old suspect. Police said the teen was taken into custody Saturday and booked into the Salt Lake County Detention Center. His name has not been released due to his age.
Detectives are still investigating what sparked the confrontation, though early reports indicate the shooting stemmed from a fight among a group of teenagers. Authorities have not confirmed whether the incident is gang-related.
Police are urging anyone with information or video footage from the scene to contact Taylorsville investigators as they continue to piece together what happened.
Community leaders and educators in the area have since called for greater conflict resolution programs and youth outreach to prevent future violence.
