A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly attacking a man in a wheelchair with a baseball bat before fleeing the scene on a bicycle, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
The suspect, identified as Travis Martin, was taken into custody Wednesday evening and now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Incident
According to a probable cause statement filed in Utah State Court, officers were dispatched around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to the area of 134 South 700 West after receiving a report of an assault involving a weapon.
Witnesses told dispatchers that a man had struck another person using a bat and then fled the area on a bicycle.
Responding officers located a suspect matching the description near 120 South Jeremy Street, just blocks away from where the incident occurred.
Contradictory Statements and Arrest
Police say when they approached Martin, he appeared agitated and spoke rapidly, displaying behavior consistent with substance use.
Martin admitted he had been in the area and got into a verbal dispute with the victim but denied that it became physical. However, officers noted inconsistencies in his statements.
At one point, Martin reportedly told investigators, “I didn’t need a bat to beat someone up,” before later admitting to lying about parts of his story.
Victim Injured and Evidence Recovered
Officers located the victim, who had visible bruises consistent with the alleged assault. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
A metal bat believed to have been used in the attack was recovered near the scene.
During an inventory search of Martin’s belongings, police say they discovered tin foil with burn marks and a glass pipe, which they identified as likely drug paraphernalia.
Charges Filed
Travis Martin has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and faces the following charges:
- Aggravated Assault (a third-degree felony)
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (a class B misdemeanor)
As of Thursday, court records show Martin remains in custody pending his initial court appearance.
The case is under active investigation, and police have not indicated whether additional charges may follow.
