A man was shot and killed by Salt Lake City police Wednesday morning after allegedly throwing a rock at officers during a confrontation near 300 West and 2100 South, authorities confirmed. One officer was injured but is expected to recover.
Deputy Police Chief Brandon Christiansen said the incident occurred around 9 a.m. near the ExtraMile Chevron gas station, following an urgent call reporting an assault in progress. When officers arrived, they were confronted by a man holding a rock.
“He had a rock in his hand. He threw it and hit one of our officers,” police spokesperson Glen Mills said. “That’s when at least one shot was fired, striking the individual.”
The injured officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the man who was shot was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As of Wednesday evening, authorities had not yet released the man’s identity.
A large perimeter around the gas station was cordoned off with police tape as investigators processed the scene. The investigation is being led by West Jordan police, following standard protocol when a police shooting involves officers from another department. The blocked-off area extended into a nearby McDonald’s parking lot, and traffic along 300 West was closed in both directions for several hours.
Officials did not confirm whether U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were in the area at the time, though ICE agents are often present nearby, particularly around the Home Depot parking lot where day laborers gather for work. The state Department of Public Safety and ICE’s local office have not yet commented on the incident.
The shooting adds to a series of recent police-involved cases under review across Utah, once again drawing attention to how quickly encounters can escalate when officers respond to volatile or unpredictable situations.
