SALT LAKE CITY — Police have charged a seventh suspect in connection with a violent gang-related shooting that erupted in a Salt Lake City neighborhood in May 2025, where rival groups exchanged gunfire in a residential area.

According to court documents, Sebastian Olmedo, 19, was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with rioting and 26 counts of discharging a firearm, both second-degree felonies. He also faces charges for engaging in dangerous weapon conduct, a third-degree felony, and possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor.

The incident occurred on May 25 near 1800 West Shannon Circle, prompting a heavy police response after residents reported hearing a flurry of gunshots.

Investigators later determined that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud between rival gangs. When rival associates arrived in two vehicles, several individuals on foot approached the cars, and as the vehicles sped away, multiple rounds were fired at them.

“Detectives believe the shooting was motivated by an ongoing conflict between rival gangs,” Salt Lake City Police said in a statement released after the incident.

Surveillance video captured a group of armed men standing in the street as two vehicles drove by slowly. One man was heard shouting, “That’s them — get ’em!” before running toward the road and firing repeatedly. In total, 26 bullets were fired, striking one of the targeted vehicles and several bystander cars parked nearby.

Despite the volume of gunfire, no injuries were reported — something investigators called “remarkable given the number of shots fired in a residential area.”

Police arrested several suspects in the weeks following the shooting, and prosecutors have since filed charges against all seven individuals believed to be involved.

In addition to Olmedo, the others charged include Herasmo Adam Galden (28), Bryan Jimenez Benitez (22), Bryan Alexis Olvera Alvarez (18), Joshua Rosas-Olvera (24), and Jose Romero-Bojorquez (22) — each facing rioting and multiple firearm discharge counts. Jimenez Benitez and Olvera Alvarez also face drug-related charges.

Another suspect, Gerardo Bejar-Reynoso (22), was charged separately with drug distribution and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing as they work to determine whether the shooting is tied to other recent gang-related violence in the Salt Lake Valley.
