Traction Law Activated for Little Cottonwood Canyon as Winter Storm Brings Fresh Snowfall

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has officially activated the Traction Law for Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210) as snowfall continues to impact the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding mountain areas. The law went into effect early Tuesday morning, requiring all vehicles traveling through the canyon to meet specific traction and tire requirements to ensure road safety.

What the Traction Law Means for Drivers

When the Traction Law is active, all motorists driving on SR-210 — the route leading to popular ski destinations like Snowbird and Alta — must be equipped with proper winter traction devices. This includes snow tires, tire chains, or snow socks, depending on the type of vehicle.

Requirements include:

  • All-Wheel Drive (AWD) or Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles:
    • Must have M+S (Mud and Snow) or M/S tires on all wheels at a minimum.
    • The best traction is achieved using 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) tires or additional traction devices such as chains or snow socks.
  • Two-Wheel Drive (2WD) vehicles:
    • Must be equipped with 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) tires on all wheels.
    • Alternatively, drivers can use chains, snow socks, or other approved traction devices on at least the two drive wheels.

UDOT officials emphasized that these measures are not only legally required during traction law activation but are also critical for preventing accidents, ensuring smooth traffic flow, and allowing snowplows to operate efficiently.

Current Weather and Road Conditions

According to UDOT’s latest updates, snow levels dropped to around 6,000 feet overnight, bringing a few inches of accumulation above 7,000 feet. Higher elevations — particularly those above 8,000 feet — could see up to six inches or more of fresh snow throughout the day.

The heaviest precipitation is expected during the morning hours, gradually tapering off by afternoon as the storm system moves east. By evening, only a few spotty showers are expected to linger in the area.

Drivers are urged to plan ahead, check UDOT Traffic updates, and avoid unnecessary travel if their vehicles do not meet traction law standards. Officials also remind drivers that violating the traction law may result in fines and vehicle restrictions within the canyon.

UDOT’s Winter Safety Reminder

UDOT continues to stress the importance of preparation during Utah’s early winter storms. Motorists heading into canyons or high-elevation routes should always:

  • Check tire tread and inflation before traveling.
  • Carry approved traction devices in the vehicle.
  • Allow extra travel time and maintain a safe following distance.

With Little Cottonwood Canyon seeing some of the earliest snow accumulation of the season, UDOT’s proactive traction enforcement aims to keep both locals and visitors safe as winter conditions settle in.
